Unlike his peers, who were drawing inspirations from Abstract Expressionism trying to bring forth the inner world and emotion, Johns sought absolute control. This early period of Johns' paintings was influenced by Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, with whom he had a close friendship that inspired some of his strongest works. His art was new, bold, surprising, commanding and unparallel to anything on the art scene. When in 1958 Leo Castelli, a gallery owner, first saw works by Jasper Johns, he had no reference for it.
